W. Eugene Smith - The Steel Worker

The most striking thing about this photo is how unreal it seems.  The tonalities in it reflect the full range from white to black but the overwhelming heaviness given by the almost totally black background contrasts perfectly with the subtle shades of gray inside the smoke.  This makes the smoke seem incredibly theatrical.
The figure is depicted shoveling god knows what onto what can only be a coke fire.  however the figure is obscured by harsh contrast removing the shadow detail and any chance for the audience to connect with a human face.  Because of this it becomes easy to raise the figure up to the position of an archetype, the grand worker.
