Assignment 3

  1. Interesting image! There's a lot to gather from this. Great composition and vertical was a great choice for this shot. I like that you have a clear view of the activity without being repetitive. Her expression is priceless. Also I find the poster in the background to be interesting and vibrant. your angle is really good as well, her shadow creates an interesting shape. Though I do find the other shadow on the right to be distracting.

  2. What a unique image. It took me a minute to figure out exactly what was going on. I like the compositional choice to have the nails and cinder block at the very bottom right of the image. It takes a minute to notice those elements but you can definitely feel their weight. The poster in the background and the strong light up front projecting a shadow make me think this is some kind of performance, but it can't be determined for certain.

  3. The image definitely has interesting elements to it that draws the viewer in, wondering what exactly is going on. Because of the poster, I assume that this woman (Ms. Punch?) is partaking in a performance that would normally draw spectators for its extreme nature (lying on a bed of nails with a cinder block on her stomach). I'm not exactly sure what is going to happen, it seems like the person to the left that is pretty much cropped out could be performing with her but it is a bit ambiguous. Regardless, her strong emotion is captured well and allows the viewer to assume that something big is just about to happen.

  4. This woman is a performer reclined on a bed of nails. Her clothing, hair and makeup communicate confidence and a tough attitude and there is a cinderblock positioned on her stomach. She is set against a backdrop and a poster possibly describing her persona, 'Miss Punch'. She appears to be bracing for impact (the snarl on her face) against the figure seen only as a bit of shadow and blur on the right side of the photograph. I imagine that, for the entertainment of a crowd, she is about to get a blow onto the cinderblock on her stomach- and emerge unharmed from the bed of nails.

  5. Ouch! Although it is obvious she is performing, because of the angle that the image was photographed, I have a hard time seeing the space as being a stage. I do not see any shadows from her viewers. The shadow on the right though is a bit distracting. I like the repetition of warm colors. The reds/oranges remind me of blood and push the idea of pain.

  6. I think that the facial expression of the woman in this image is what caught me the most. You can tell that she is a performer, but I would assume some of this exoression is real becuase it looks like it is truely an uncomfortable position. I would have like to see a little more of where she is though, becuase right now it seems like she could be in your room rather than in a public forum. This makes me wonder a little about the "documentary" part. All over though, I think that this is a very interesting image, and it gives me a glance into something that I wouldn't normally see.

  8. I love the facial expression you were able to catch. I like how you were able to get all of the sign into the image and all the wonderful colors from the lights and shadows. I would like to see the other figure who is on stage, or have all evidence of him gone. I'm imagining that "Erik" is about to take a mallet (or some other kind of smashing device) and smash the cinder block. I think if you had zoomed in just a little bit to get a closer look at the woman's face, or zooming out to see the other figure, would have improved the image. I think think this is a exciting image!

  9. the strange composition adds to the strangeness of this girl and what she is doing. Im not a huge fan of the over-saturated look tho. It pushes that edgy feel to the brink and I when right over the side. Besides, when I think of side shows I think of rags, dust, old lighting, wagon wheels, maybe sepia tone but definitely undersaturation. But thats just my aesthetic.
